injection molding.

Prepare a drawing-based review of 316L stainless steel MIM parts, with the environment, finish and acceptance checks defined before quotation.

When to discuss MIM 316L.

316L is a stainless material option for MIM projects where the service environment and finished surface need careful definition. BASF identifies its 316L feedstock with corrosion resistance, toughness and polishability as material-selection considerations.

Begin with the environment the component will see. Describe the contact media, cleaning process, appearance requirements and any required validation. A material family name alone does not establish suitability for the application.

Specify the environment and the finished surface.

  • Contact media, cleaning agents and service conditions relevant to the component
  • Required material specification and any composition restrictions
  • Polishing, passivation or other agreed finishing, with the appearance faces identified
  • Critical bores, threads or sealing interfaces measured after finishing
  • Required corrosion, surface or material verification and the acceptance method

Plan the geometry and the secondary operations.

Send a 3D model together with the dimensioned drawing. Identify the surfaces that locate the part in its assembly and the features whose final fit is critical.

The review must establish which dimensions can be delivered through the MIM process and which need secondary machining or another finishing operation. Where appearance matters, agree a reference and acceptance criteria before sample approval.

Build a 316L RFQ around the actual use.

For a small component, give the overall envelope, approximate weight if known, sample quantity and expected annual demand. State whether the design has been approved or is still changing.

Details to include in your enquiry
Material definition316L designation, applicable specification and required documentation
EnvironmentContact media, cleaning and service conditions to be evaluated
SurfaceAppearance standard, finishing route and dimensions after finishing
VerificationSample checks, any specified tests and agreed acceptance criteria
Order planTrial samples, production releases and realistic repeat demand

Compare 316L with the requirement, not only another grade.

If you are also considering MIM 17-4PH, describe the functional need and the required finished condition. The alternatives should be assessed against the same application and verification requirements.

If tooling is not yet justified or the geometry is still changing, include a CNC vs MIM review. The selected production route should be confirmed before treating a sample as production approval.

Material reference

BASF Catamold material portfolio provides general feedstock-selection information. It does not establish the performance of a Partavon project or confirm which feedstock a manufacturing source will use. Supplier capability, material condition and documentation are confirmed during quotation.

Questions before quotation

Can you confirm that a 316L part will suit my environment?

Describe the contact media, cleaning process and service conditions, and identify any required test or specification. Suitability must be assessed for the particular application.

Can the RFQ include polishing or passivation?

State the required process, appearance faces, masking needs and acceptance criteria. Availability and the finished dimensions are confirmed for the project.

Can 316L MIM parts be supplied without secondary machining?

That depends on the features and acceptance requirements. Flag the critical bores, threads and mating surfaces so the manufacturing review can identify additional operations.
